Charming Avanos in Cappadocia

Avanos is supposed to have dealt with clay since the times of the Hittites. The knowledge of making pottery is given traditionally from father to son. The typically red and fat clay is coming from the near hills which also gave the name to the Red River which is passing through Avanos. In old times the wheel was thrown with the feet - nowadays electricity is more and more used.

Avanos is known to be the handicraft center of Cappadocia. There are even the old well-known Avanos Carpets which are hard to be found now. It has a beautiful old town with houses made of tuff stone - the stone which made the marvellous landscape of Cappadocia.
